Victorius Hasaacas Ladies celebrate their triumph

Two carefully taken penalty kicks by Jennifer Cudjoe were enough to ensure that Hasaacas Ladies left the Accra Sports Stadium as the winners of the maiden National Women’s League in Ghana.

They beat their compatriots Fabulous Ladies who had arrived in Accra hopeful of going to Kumasi with the trophy.

Fabulous Ladies had indeed started as the better of the two sides in the first half and took the lead after a penalty was awarded to them by referee Christina Zigah.  Agnes Aduako, who was brought down in the penalty box, got up to convert the kick to put the Kumasi based side in the lead.

Hasaacas Ladies continued from where they left off with the pressure but captain Samira Suleman, Diwura Wasila Soale, Jennifer Cudjoe and Elizabeth Cudjoe all failed to take the chances that came their way.

The first half ended one all with the Hasmal Ladies clearly on top of the game.

Hasaacas Ladies continued from where they left off after referee Christiana Zigah whistled for the commencement of the second half.

Though they kept on piling pressure on the defence of Fabulous Ladies and continuously switched play to confuse the already bemused Kumasi side, Hasaacas Ladies failed to get the much needed lead.

Substitute keeper, Opoku Jennifer who had taken the position of former Black Queens number one goalkeeper, Memunatu Sulemana stood between Hasaacas Ladies and a winning goal for long spell of the game.

South Africa’s women football team, Banyana Banyana had wanted to win their first continental silverware, but their hosts and one time champions, Equatorial Guinea were too strong for them.

Though they had held on for a longer part of the first half, the ladies from the rainbow country could not stand the might of the hosts.

Gloria Chinasa netted a close range header in the 43 rd minute to give Equatorial Guinea the lead before they tore the South African side apart in the second half with three more goals.

Tiga and Geneveva Ayonman both scored before Chinasa scored again to end the game 4-0 in a somewhat one sided second half game.

South Africa had earlier in the tournament lost 0-1 to Equatorial Guinea in the group stage and wanted to have their revenge in the final game. This however did not come to fruition as the hosts looked hungrier for their second silverware having won their first in the 2008 edition.

In the third place game between Cameroon and Nigeria, the Indomitable Lioness beat the Falconets 1-0 to go home with some pride after missing out on the ultimate.
